Is FF XI worthy of the series?

I'm fairly new to the FF series and not familiar with a lot of thegames but I haven't heard even a single thing about this one...why isthis? Was it not good enough to be remembered?

Started to buy the games but should I buy this one or will I be dissapointed?
FFXI is a MMO, and instead of controlling a whole party of characters, you control just one. FFXI is a game you have to pay a subscription fee each month to play, and when you first install it you have a one month free trial period. You do need a credit card or debit card as well.

It is available for the PS2 in Japan and America, PC and Xbox 360 in the rest of the world. A basic version was recently released here in Australia, which consists of just the original game. For the Xbox 360, it comes with the first three expansions. There is a Vana'diel Collection 2008 to be released soon, which consists of the original game, and all four expansions.

You can change your job to a variety of classic FF jobs like, Warrior, Red Mage, White Mage, Dark Knight, Summoner, Dancer, etc. Initially you have only Warrior, Monk, White Mage, Black Mage, Red Mage and Thief available to choose from. Once you hit level 30, you can then undergo certain quests to unlock the advanced jobs (Dark Knight, Paladin, Summoner, Corsair, etc).

Some of the advanced jobs are only available in expansions for the game, and there are currently four for FFXI - Rize of the Zilart, Chains of Promathia, Treasures of Aht Urghan and Wings of the Goddess.

It can be rather annoying, having to level your main job, and then after 18 (and fulfilling a quest), levelling a support job as well. However you can level pretty easily from level 1 to at least 12. From that point onwards you need to form a party with other Player Characters and experience party together.

Also, getting gil in the game is different from the other FF's. You can still get some gil from certain monsters, but mainly from a few options. First is to 'farm' certain monsters, and gathering the items they drop you can sell them on the auction house for a nice profit. Also, depending on your fame level in your country (which you can build up by doing various quests and the like), you can sell items to the NPC shops for a certain amount of gil.

FFXI WILL consume a LOT of your time, as a lot of MMO's do. However, if you do stick at it, it is a good game with a good story.
