But just who is this Al Howin?

The paper on which this story was written was drenched in Pumpkwin juice... It has taken years for Scribes to transcribe it...

“It all started with a stupid contest... not too long ago, in a region not too far away... For a handful of farmers, the ultimate prize was at stake. One Pumpkwin farmer would become the official distributor for the whole kingdom of Amakna, approved and respected by all and publically mandated by the king. It was a sought after recognition, that they say could make a man and take him straight from rags to riches.

And that year was Al Howin’s year. In his wildest dreams he hadn’t dreamt of pumkwins so round and full as those he lovingly grew. He knew that this was his big chance and that never again would he have stardom so close to his grasp. He was anxious. Anxious to see what other farms would bring in...

Gobballs were peacefully eating away, unaware of the dangers to come.

And that’s when he saw her. A wretched wench, with an immense Pumpkwin was gloating around, owning the room, only a single black tooth apparent in what seemed to be a smile.

“This could not be happening!” he thought. He could not be second best. There was no prize or fame for second in line. He turned to his master, with dry eyes and a resolute face and pleaded for his help.

Shtefwan, the old bwork mage, looked on calmly at his protégé and said: “There is a way. But the price is more than you could bear. If I cast a spell to double the size of that pure pumpkin nested in your hand, for every seed in its flesh you will suffer a year of shame”.

Al Howin was deaf to the warning, thinking that the bwork’s warning was nothing but nonsense. He swore that no price was too high for what he knew was his. For that, he was ready to take on even Rushu’s wrath. And so it was done. With a twirl of a Shtefwan staff, and a few words spoken that should not be brought back into memory, his whole field of pumpkwins doubled in size.

Al Howin won, and the curse was born.

The spell was a double edged sword. With the festivities beating strong, Al Howin’s fields were left unwatched and soon Gobballs came lurking, starved and tempted by the lush orange fruit. One bite was enough for the curse to take effect. They were immediately transformed into hideous beasts, half-gobbal and half-pumpkin. Panicked, the hybrid creatures turned on men and attacked all in sight. And with all things gone from bad to worse, it was found that the curse was contagious.

Man, woman and children lost half of themselves to the pumpkin curse. It was found quite by accident - by a fearful child hiding in a hollow Pumpkwin - that by agreeing to ridicule oneself and wear a pumpkin head, the effect of the curse was destroyed.

Allister sent out a pumpkwin to each and every Amaknan. And Al Howin was run out of town, exiled from all that he knew and loved, his fields burnt and his farm left in total abandonment as a reminder of what becomes of those devoured by greed.

The curse only lasted a few moons and soon everything was back to normal. But every year, around the same time, talk of Al Howin’s treachery can be heard when life forms not quite Gobballs not quite man, are seen roaming the land.

The funny thing is... no one, not a single person present on Contest Day, remembers seeing an old crone, with her toothless smile, flaunting her super sized pumpkwin...”
