Final Fantasy XI Guides:Newbie Guide - Page 1: Selecting your Race and Starting

Race Benifits...

I would recommend that you read the The Job Guide to determine what Job it is that you wish to play. Picking a race is more important than most people think. Jobs are not limited by race so any race can be any job. However, some races are more proficient at specific jobs than others. The reason is based on their starting stats. Below is a list of the different races and just what it is they are good at. While it is important to pick a race that is best adapted to the job you plan on playing its also important that you don't let it dictate what class you really want to play.

Galka: A tough and strong race, they are initially suited towards warriors and other fighter jobs.

Hume: Humans are the average race and have no direct benefits toward one job or another. If you would think you may end up switching jobs a lot its best to pick Hume as your race to be.

Mithra: Dexterous and sneaky, these creatures make fine thieves but they are also well balanced for other positions as well.

Tarutaru: These little creatures have mastered the magical arts and make excellent spell casters. Dont let their small cute apperance fool you, when it comes to magic they mean business.

Elvaan:
Elvaan are know through the land for their fine sword skills and strong sense of national pride.

The Hard Numbers...

Probably the most important information in the guide are the charts below. The Chart shows the changes you gain and lose in your initial job choice. By using the information in the two following charts the starting stats can be calculated for the race and job you choose.

VIT 8 7 6 6 6
AGI 6 5 6 7 7
INT 6 5 6 6 8

So what exactly do the stats mean?

The following is a break down of how each stat affects your character.,

Stat Break Down...

HP – Health Points
Your character's health. Make sure your health does not reach zero. If you run out of health your character is dead. While you can still communicate. As punishment for dying you will lose some experience. You have the option of returning to your home point or getting a Raise from a fellow player. To recover health use the /heal command or press Alt+h.

MP – Mana Points
Your Mana is the power used to cast spells. Watch that you don’t run out of Mana because once you do you will cant cast any spells. To recharge your Mana use the /heal command or press Alt+H.

STR – Strength
The higher the STR the stronger your character is. STR affects physical attack damage. The higher STR the more damage your character does. This is a very important stat for all melee classes.

DEX – Dexterity
Dexterity will affect how fast and how accurate your attacks are. This stat is important for melee classes.

VIT – Vitality
Vitality affects how much physical damage your character can take. Vitality is also a very important stat for any melee class that plans on taking a few hits for the team.

AGI – Agility
Agility affects how often your character will evade attacks. This stat is important for all classes.

INT – Intelligence
This stat affects how much damage is done by Black Mage spells. If you want to really do some damage with your Black Mage its best you have as much Intelligence as possible. Clearly this stat is important to Black Mages.

MND – Mind
Mind is one of the more complex stats. Mind has three different aspects. Affects three things and is very useful. The more Mind your character has the less damage your character will take from magic damage. It also affects how resistant your character is to abnormal status. Mind is also an important stat for White Mages. They affect White Mage spells.

CHR - Charisma
Some spells are charisma based. These spells are indicated with a (c) beside them. The more Charisma the better success rate for charisma based spells. Charisma also affects Bard songs.
