San d'Oria... Good old San... It can seem overwhelming for the new player. Where does one go for adventurous fame? Where does one get the glory? What do I do if I want to be rich? This guide is broken up into three sections, tailored to each type of player. Enjoy.
For the poor lowly adventurer-wannabe:
You're poor. You don't even have enough money to buy a half-eaten sandwich. What do you do? I think that the Elvaan officers who welcomed you told you what to do. Take your adventurers coupon to the NPC that you were told to. Where is she? Check the friggin' map, my friend. She is standing under a tree on the left of the grand staircase to Northern San D'Oria. She gives you 50 gil, but now what? You need money for equipment, but that's it... Do what an aspiring adventurer does best: Kill stuff! Once you get to about level 6 you can fight orcs in the Ronfaure. Don't be scared... they don't bite. Or, wait, they do. Now that you're on your feet money-wise, go buy some stuff. First, buy armor. Many would stress that the weapons are more important, but if you don't have good armor, nothing is going to save you from that one lucky hit that that forest hare lands. Oce you've got your armor go and start a mission by talking to the guard on the far left of the west gate. This is what the aspiring adventurer is all about: missions. They give you rewards, and you can quickly climb the social ladder in the game. The first mission is easy, especially if you had previously been out killing orcs. Just bring one of the orcish axes you've probably found to the guard, and your done. And if you come across anymore, sell them at an NPC shop to further your adventuring! Beat the missions until you reach rank 2, and then make sure to donate crystals to the guards for more mission fun. Oh, and skip missions when you can. It saves a headache. Oh, and when you go out to kill monsters, get a signet. Might as well work for your country and work for yourself.
For the penny-pinching merchant:
Step one: turn in your adventurer coupon. Step two: sell stuff. When you get a chance, do missions until you get to be rank 5, because then you can travel inbetween major cities to sell your wares. As any other new player, kill stuff until you have enough money to start doing something. Go find a guild that you like, and settle down, killing orcs for money to purchase materials to make your wares. Make stuff and sell it at the auction house. Take advantage of adventurers selling their old equipment. Make a deal, save some money, and sell it to another for more. One man's garbage is another's gold. Just keep pedaling your wares and working on your crafting skills. There are also many money-making quests you can repeat to get quick cash. There is a woman standing near the entrance to the tanner's guild that will buy 3 rabbit hides at a time for 120 gil each time you deliver, and there is a man standing by the railing towards the blacksmith's guild in Northern San D'Oria that will pay 200 gil for every two pairs of bat wings you bring him. Kill two birds with one stone here: make sure to get a signet from the gate guard when you go out to get crystals, valuable for your crafting skills. When you get seemingly useless items, put them up for auction. Sell goblin armor for 20-30 gil a piece in the AH. You'll be rolling in it.
For the Jack-of-all-trades pop star:
Kill stuff. Gain levels. Betray your friends for money. Actually, scratch that last one. Do (almost) anything to gain levels, and power. Everyone knows that the more poweful players are better suited to help others. Everyone will run to you. You'll be popular. Try to make friends in high places when starting out. The San D'Oria auction house is a great place to meet, because it's the economical center of town, and that's the place to be. If you want to make a good reputation for yourself, you can just wander about the La Thein or the Ronfaure helping people out. They might even pay you for your service. Fame doesn't just apply to real players, either. In San D'Oria, NPC fame counts as well. Do the more difficult missions when you grow to handle them. Check out the wepons shop for some crazy-hard quests for lower-level players. Do repeating quests (see Ôfor the penny-pinching merchant'), which will boost your fame tremendously if you continually deliver. There are definite rewards to this: you'll get some pretty awesome quests that will yield great items. When you grow in that power I mentioned, you'll be able to kill monsters that drop rare items that can be sold to NPC shops for thousands of gil per piece. Remember, you can't do it alone. Make friends, get famous. Become powerful with the help of those friends. Through that power you'll get money. Hey, then you'll be famous AND rich. Not bad. Not bad at all.
