Introduction: While walking through RuneScape, you may have noticed that you got attacked by something. These things are random events, and there are alot of them in RuneScape. Some you can get anywhere, for others you have to do a specific thing in RuneScape, in order to get them. Random Events were introduced by Jagex to stop autoers. They've become a part of the game. Some are frustrating, some give you that item you've always wanted, and some give you simply a small amount of coins.
There are a few categories you can place all Random Events in:
- (Almost) Friendly Events
- Dangerous!
- Mini-Quest Randoms
- Hindrances
(Almost) Friendly Events
These people are awesome! Nice persons who give you free things just to make you feel good. Don't ignore them though!

Mysterious Old Man
Let's start with the most common one. This hooded old man randomly appears and gives you a nice present, or he brings you to an area where you can get another cool reward.
When he appears next to you, saying "Here you go (your name here), it's all yours!" and disappears again, check your inventory, you will either have a Strange Box, or one of the following items:
Kebab
Random amount of gold
Spinach Roll
Uncut Gems (Except for Dragonstone or Onyx)
Talismans (Members only)
Half key (Loop or Teeth, Members only)
You may also have to speak with the Mysterious Old Man to recieve your reward.
When you receive a Strange Box, click on it to open it, answer the question, it's quite obvious. The reward will be one of the things listed above.
You may need to talk to him before he gives you your reward. Do this before he gets mad and teleports you to a random place.
Quiz Master
When the Mysterious old man appears saying "It's your lucky day, (your name here)!" you will be teleported to an area with 2 chairs, 1 for you and 1 for the Quiz Master. You will play the game "Pick out the odd one out".
This is an easy game. Select the odd item and you've won the first round! There are 3 rounds, when you've won you can choose between 1000 coins or a mystery box. The item inside the mystery box is random, from a tinderbox to an uncut diamond.
Mime

One of the most wanted Random Events. The Mysterious old man will teleport you to the Mime Stage. The Mime next to you will perform an emote, when he's done, perform the same emote. When you've gotten them all correctly, you get either a cool piece of Mime clothing, or a cool emote.
When you've gotten all the clothes and emotes, you will get 500 coins in further mime events. When you lose a piece of the clothing, you can get it back when you get the event again.
Note to members: If you are hunting and have set a birdsnare before you are brought to the Mime, there is a possibility that the snare will fall. This will cause the current mime action to cancel and your chatbar changes from mime options to regular chat window. There is no need to worry though. The Mime will give you a new, or possibly the same, mime action for you to imitate. It will not be counted as an error.
The Maze
One of the rarest and by far the most rewarding Random Event. The Mysterious old man will bring you to a weird looking maze; make your way to the center as soon as possible. Go through the grill-looking doors. At the left-bottom of the screen, you'll see a percentage. This is how much of the reward is left. It will go from 100% till 0%, and at 0%, the reward is nothing. There are some chests inside the maze, most of them contain basic runes (anything between airs runes and body runes) and aren't really worth it.
Note that the Time-Counter will not stop if you log out. Your time will still run out!
Possible rewards (Most of the time, you get around 3 of these rewards per maze):
Bronze arrows
Iron arrows
Steel arrows
Gold coins
Feathers
Silver ores (noted)
Coal (noted)
Mithril ores (noted)
Chaos runes
Death runes
Nature runes
Various fish
Map of the Maze:
Niles, Miles, and Giles
You may know these fellows from Runescape Classic, they were the only way to note your items. When one of them appears, talk to him, you'll get an interface with a very easy question.
He will give you a reward (mostly uncut gems and coins). If you ignore him. He will note the items in your inventory and/or note the weapon that you're wielding and he will also teleport you away.
Genie
Another very useful random event, talk to him to get a lamp.
This lamp can't be stored in your bank. Rub it and you'll get a menu.
Select a stat you want some experience for. The experience you get is calculated with this formula:
Your skill level*10
For example, your cooking level is 50, you select cooking. 50*10=500
That's 500 exp for free!
When you ignore him, he'll teleport you to a random place.
Drunken Dwarf
The most worthless random event, unless you're training your combat. When you talk to him you receive a kebab and a pint of beer. If you ignore him he will start throwing rocks at you until you're dead. He'll stop hitting you once you talk to him.
Strange Plant (Members Only)
These randomly grow up out of the ground, there's never a message that it's yours, so watch out (When on high detail and sound effects on, the strange plant will make a sound if it's yours). When there's a fruit hanging on it, try to pick it and you'll receive a strange fruit. Eating a strange fruit restores 30% of your running energy.
Ignoring this nice plant makes it very angry and it will start to attack you. Warning! It can poison you!
Rick Turpentine
This resigned highwayman despites his past actions and wants to give you something valuable to make you and himself feel good. Just talk to him to receive your present. The possible loot is the same as you can get from a Mysterious old man (Kebab, Random amount of gold, Spinach Roll, Uncut Gems, Talismans, Half key). Ignore him and he'll shoot you to death with his crossbow.
Frog
Some frogs will appear on the ground. One will have a crown on his/her head. Talk to this frog. He/She will ask you to kiss her. If you do so he/she will turn into a prince/princess (Prince when your character is female, princess if your character is male). You'll be awarded with a frog token.
This frog token can be exchanged at Thessalia in the Varrock Clothes Store for a prince/princess outfit, or a frog mask.
| Name | Picture |
| Frog mask | ![]() |
| Princess outfit (blouse + skirt) | ![]() |
| Prince outfit (tunic + leggings) | ![]() |
Note that the prince outfit can only be obtained by male characters and the princess outfit by female characters only. If you visit the Makeover Mage to change your character's gender then try to wear the "wrong" outfit, it will magically turn into the "right" outfit for your gender.
When you ignore the frogs, they will turn you into a frog and teleport you into the frog world, a very small world with around 5 frogs and the frog prince/princess on the small peninsula. Talk to him/her and apologize, you'll be teleported back, without a token, though you'll get the song "Frogland" that is definitely worth it!
Dr Jekyll (Members only)
When this guy shows up. He will ask for an herb. If you don't have any herbs in your inventory, he will ask for a Guam leaf. Tell him you don't have any, he will give you a Strength potion (2).If you have any herbs in your inventory, he will ask for that one.
| Herb Used | Reward |
| Clean guam | Strength potion (4 dose) |
| Clean marrentill | Antipoison potion (4 dose) |
| Clean tarromin | Attack potion (4 dose) |
| Clean harralander | Restore potion (4 dose) |
| Clean ranarr | Energy potion (4 dose) |
| Clean toadflax | Defence potion (4 dose) |
| Clean irit | Agility potion (4 dose) |
| Clean avantoe | Super strength potion (4 dose) |
| Clean kwuarm | Super energy potion (4 dose) |
| Clean snapdragon | Super strength potion (4 dose) |
| Clean candatine | Super restore potion (4 dose) |
| Clean lantadyne | Super defence potion (4 dose) |
| Clean dwarf weed | Mage potion (4 dose) |
| Clean torstol | Can NOT be used |
If you ignore him, he will turn into Hyde (level depends on your combat level). He drops some nice potions and isn't that hard to kill.
Sandwich Lady
One of the most hated person in RuneScape. The Sandwich lady will appear and tell you she's got sandwiches, choose what she says and you get it. Choose wrong and you'll be teleported.
When you talk to her she will tell you that you look hungry and to take a certain item from the tray. (Only take the item she says to. If you take the wrong thing you'll be hit with a baguette and teleported, maybe even to the wilderness!)
Once you continue she'll bring up the tray, I've labeled the items on the tray. At the bottom of the tray it says what to take once again incase you forgot.
Once you finish you may go back to what you were previously doing.
NOTE: The pie is a meat pie or an apple pie.
Cap'n Hand
The same concept as the Mysterious old man and Rick Turpentine, talk to him to get one of these things:
Kebab
Random amount of gold
Spinach Roll
Uncut Gems (No Dragonstone or Onyx)
Talismans (Members only)
Half key (Loop or Teeth, Members only)
Ignore him and you'll feel the power of his crossbow until your death.
Freaky Forester
This nice dressed man will teleport you to an open field inside a deserterd forest.
You need to kill a pheasant for him, kill the pheasant (they have no combat stats). Pick up the raw pheasant, and bring it to him.
Once you have given him the pheasant, you will be awarded a piece of the awesome Lederhosen clothing.
| Name | Image |
| Lederhosen hat | ![]() |
| Lederhosen top | ![]() |
| Lederhosen shorts | ![]() |
Once you have recieved all of the pieces of Lederhosen, you will only be able to get 500 GP from the event, unless you have dropped, or lost, your clothing.
If you fail to give the Forester the correct pheasant, you will not be rewarded, and you will be teleported to another place.
Drill Demon
He has chosen you for his new army, yay!
The only thing you need to do now is to complete the drill. Do what he says you need to do. If you do this correctly, you will be awarded with a piece of the cool camo clothing!
| Name | Image |
| Camo helmet | ![]() |
| Camo top | ![]() |
| Camo bottoms | ![]() |
Once you have recieved all of the pieces of Camo, you will only be able to get 500 GP from the event, unless you have dropped, or lost, your clothing.
Cap'n Arnav (Members only)
A pirate that only appears while you're farming. He asks you to open the lock on a chest he found. It's easy to do. Underneath each column is a word, for example "Coins". Click on the arrows at the column until you get a picture of some coins in the middle, do this with all 3 and click on "unlock" to open it. It's useful to double-check if you have them all right before you hit the unlock button, when you got one or more wrong, you'll be teleported to a random place.
The rewards are the same as the Mysterious old man event (Kebab, Random amount of gold, Spinach Roll, Uncut Gems, Talismans, Half key).
Surprise Exam
The Mysterious old man will teleport you to a classroom. Inside the classroom Mr. Mordaut will ask to answer three question correctely in order to pass his exam. There are two types of questions he can ask you.
What comes next?
Pick out the object that comes next in the pattern.
Cryptic Hint
Pick the three objects that match the given criptic description. To finish this type of question click the "thumbs up" button in the bottomleft corner of the screen.
Once you've passed the exam, you will be told you are the best in the class and may leave the classroom. Mr. Mordaut will tell you which door to exit from by a color and symbol. As a reward you will get the book of knowledge which will give you experience in a skill of your choice. The amount of experience given is 15 times your current level of the chosen skill. F.e. if your cooking level is 20, you gain 300 xp. If you fail the exam you end up at a random location.
Dangerous!
These can be very dangerous, it's better to run away if they appear, though some have a nice reward when defeated...
When it says they have a combat level, this level depends on your combat level, the higher your level, the higher their level. These are the possibilities for the monster levels: 14, 15, 20, 29, 45, 47, 49, 64, 79, 120, and 159.
Fleeing from one of these basically meaning run away until you can't see him on the mini-map anymore and walk back, they will be gone most of the time, if not, try again and run further this time.
Most of these appear during skill-training, though there are 2 who don't. They can appear anytime. I'll start with these.

Normal Dangerous Events
These will show up during anything you do, not specified skills.
Evil Chicken
Yes, it sounds funny, but be aware! These evil feathered birds will attack you without a reason. They use a magic attack and hit often. When killed, they drop a raw chicken, some bones, an egg and a random amount of feathers (mostly between the 50 and 100).
Swarm
When you get these, run away immediately, there's absolutely NO way to kill them. When you get these while you're fighting a monster in a non-multicombat zone. The swarm will attack you and you can't finish killing the monster you were fighting before you've fled.
Dangerous Mining Events
Rock Golem
He'll randomly attack you while mining, his combat level depends on your level. He uses melee attacks when close, but ranges if you are behind a rock or run away. Run away or kill it. It has some nice drops like a Rune ore, or a Rune pickaxe.
Exploding Rocks
When you see weird bubbles coming out of a rock you're mining, stop immediately. When you continue, the rock explodes, dealing up to 10 damage to you and damages your pickaxe. Fortunately, Nurmof inside the Dwarven Mines can repair your pickaxe for you.
Dangerous Woodcutting Events
Tree Spirit
These appear when you are woodcutting; his combat level depends on your level. Run away or kill it. Some of his nice drops are 22 Nature runes and herb seeds.
Ent
These are the Exploding rocks in Woodcutting. When you see a face appear on a tree and it starts moving, stop with cutting until it's gone. If you don't stop it will hurt you around 10 damage and damages your axe, Bob in Lumbridge can repair your axe for a small fee.
Dangerous Fishing Events
River Troll
Another one of those aggressive Guardians. Only appears when you're fishing, his combat level depends on your level. He hasn't got a lot of good drops; the best are a Casket or a Raw shark.
Whirlpool
When these appear on a fishing spot, stop with fishing there and take another one. When you continue fishing here, it will suck up your equipment and you'll have to buy a new one.
Dangerous Prayer Events
Shade
Appears randomly when burying bones or using bones at any house altar. Not really worth killing, they only drop shade robes which have a small prayer bonus. Mostly bought by players as a collectors item.
Zombie
Appears randomly when burying bones or using bones at any house altar. Fight it or run away. They drop a variety of bones (Bones, Big bones, and Dragon bones). These can come in pairs (for example: 2 Big bones and 1 Dragon bone) or single (5 big bones). They also drop fishing bait.
Dangerous Thieving Events (Members only)
Watchman
Appear while thieving, a big pain when you're thieving on low hp. They don't really have any good drops, except for the very rare left shield half.
Poisonous Gas
While stealing from chests, this may occur. You'll see some gas coming out of the chest, walk back a few steps until it's gone, if you don't do this it will poison you!
Mini-Quest Randoms
- Evil Bob's Island
- Pious Pete
- Pillory
- Prison Pete
- Pinball
- Leo the Gravedigger
- Evil Twin
Evil Bob's Island
Evil bob only appears while training magic, or fishing. When he appears, he will kidnap you and bring you to his island, ScapeRune, the place where everything is the other way around. There are 7 steps you have to follow until you can escape again.
- Grab a fishing net. Any of them will do.
- Talk to the female servant, she will tell you on which side of the island you have to fish. Remember the statue.
- Go to the proper side and fish up one "Fishlike thing" which is already cooked, weird...

- Use it on an uncooking pot near Evil Bob to uncook it.
- Use the Raw fishlike thing on Evil Bob.
- When he falls asleep, walk past him through the portal, you'll be teleported back to where you originally were and you'll be awarded 650 Fishing, or Magic exp.
(Note: if you failed the first time, then you will have to give Evil Bob two of the Raw Fishlike things.)
Pious Pete
Pious Pete is a monk who appears randomly. He needs someone to light his candles.
Try to light the candles, move the taper by clicking on the arrows you'll see. Light them with the Light button (the one with a flame on it). Don't mind the burnt out ones, only light the long ones. When you're done with all of them, you'll be teleported back to where you came from with your reward.
Coins and Fire runes are a possible reward.
Pillory
This happens while thieving. You'll be transported to a cage. Try the open the door, you'll get an interface (see picture below). Watch the lock in the top-left corner, memorize the shape of the lock. Now take a look at the 3 keys, select the one which would fit in the lock. Do this 3 times and you'll be released. When you fail one, an extra lock will be added to the cage. When done, you'll be teleported back to where you came from, maybe with a reward.
Prison Pete
That nasty Evil Bob drags you to the ScapeRune prison this time. You'll be in a large room with a lot of balloon beasts. Prison Pete will talk to you.
He'll tell you that you need to pull the big lever. Pull it and you'll see which balloon beast you need to pop to get the correct key.
Go through the room until you find the balloon beast you need to pop. Pop it and give the key it drops to Prison Pete.
Repeat this process 2 times, every time you give the correct key to Prison Pete, one of the barriers will disappear. When you give a wrong key, one barrier will be added. When done, you'll be teleported back to where you came from with a reward.
Some of the rewards are:
2 Uncut diamonds (Noted)
428-521 Coins
6, 10, 11 Chaos runes
2-9 Law runes
2 Ugthanki kebabs (Noted) (Members only)
Pinball
The mysterious old man as a new game for you, pinball!
In this game you have to tag 10 poles with some green rings around them, you'll get 1 point per good pole tagged. The rings are hard to see, but if you look good, you can easily identify them:
Note that if you tag a pole without rings around them, your score will be reset to 0, and if you try to walk away without 10 points, the 2 trolls, Flippa and Tilt will whack you back in, resetting your score to 0.
The rewards are 1-5 noted cut gems (Saphire, Emerald, Ruby, and Diamond).
Leo the Gravedigger
Leo will appear when you are burying bones or using bones at any house alter. He's desperate and needs some help with some coffins. They're all in the wrong place and you have to re-order them.
Note that you can store your items in the mausoleum, they wil be transfered to your bank, you won't be able to get them back unless you go to a bank.
Pick up the coffins out all of the 5 graves, if you don't have enough inventory space to do this, you can store things in the Mausoleum, they will be transported to your bank account. Check one of the coffins, it will contain a skull, 5 piles of bones and 3 other items, these items can be things used in farming, mining, pottery, cooking, and woodcutting.
This is the one with woodcutting items:
Now go check the gravestones, if you find the one with an axe, put the woodcutting coffin in it.
The gravestone with an axe:
Do this with all the others too:
Axe Gravestone goes with the Woodcutting coffin.
Watering Can Gravestone goes with the Farming coffin.
Pickaxe Gravestone goes with the Mining coffin.
Chef's hat Gravestone goes with the Cooking coffin.
Pot Gravestone goes with the Pottery coffin.
Once you have recieved all of the pieces of Zombie clothing, and all of the emotes, you will only be able to get 500 GP from the event, unless you have dropped, or lost, your clothing.
Evil Twin
Molly will teleport you to a small room with a door, talk to Molly and she'll tell you about her evil twin sister. She'll ask you to go next door and use the mechanic claw to catch her sister.
She looks exactly like Molly, so take a good look at molly before you go through the door (you won't be able to go back). Operate the mechanic claw, you'll get this interface:
Use the arrows to move the claw and press the button to let it catch what's beneath it. You'll only have 2 chances to catch the correct suspect. Note that they move all the time, so it might take some time before you can catch her.
When you've caught the evil sister, Molly will thank you and give you your reward (Noted gems). When you haven't catched her in 2 tries, you'll be teleported to a random place.
Hindrances
These are the worst random events, no-one wants them because they aren't rewarding at all (with one small exception). They're all simply a small waste of your time.
- Lost and Found Office
- Big Fish
Lost and Found Office
The only rewarding Hindrance-random event. When you use a teleport spell or when you are teleported to the rune essence mine, you may get sent here.
There's a problem in the Abyssal space, if you want to get where you were planning on going to, operate the appendage that looks different then the other ones. When you wait to long, you will start getting hit 1's and 2's. When completed you'll get some random (mostly law and air) runes or 12 pure or rune essence as a recompensation.
Big Fish
Jumps out of a fishing spot and steals your fishing equipment and spits it out on the floor near you. Very irritating.
