RuneScape Cheats:Dust Devil Guide

Introduction

Too many players throughout the Runescape world, finding the dragon chainmail as their own monster drop is a dream that few may hope to achieve. There are two ways to go about searching- the first is the all too-well-known kalphite queen, the level 333 giant beetle-like creature that resides in the kalphite dungeon in the desert below Al-Kharid. The other is the lesser- known, but still famous, dust devil. A distant cousin of fire giants in that the two have very similar drop lists, dust devils require a slayer level of 65 and are only found within the Smokey Well visited during the Desert Treasure quest.

Many players have been by the idea of finding a dragon chain, and some have found several, but most are still slaying, waiting for a drop of their own.

Dust Devil information:

Dust Devil
Hp: 105

Drop list: Found Here

Getting Started

The recommended level for melee is 90+.
The recommended level for range is 75+.

To start off, the initial basic requirements list:

  • 65 Slayer.
  • Facemask (obtain from any slayer master) OR a Gas mask (from Plague City/ Morning's End quests), both have the same stats so one is not better then other.

Important note: the Facemask will protect you from the air and the Dust Devils themselves, the Gas Mask will only protect you from the air and NOT for the Dust Devils themselves!
Attacking the Dust Devils with a Gas Mask on instead of a Facemask will result in you taking 18 damage each hit. The hits will also lower all combat skills and Agility.
  • Finished Desert Treasure Quest up to the point with the mirrors.
  • Coins for Shantay pass and carpet ride (if you choose to use the carpet).

Once you have these, there are two ways to go; melee or range.

Here is a picture of what most Dust Devil slayers will wear while ranging:

Range Equipment

If you don't have barrows gloves (highest level gloves from the Recipe for Disaster quest) or ranger boots you can swap those out, but whatever you do don't forget the facemask; you have to have it. The ring of wealth is optional, some think it lowers the chance of getting a dragon chain, some think it increases. Your inventory is nothing special; runes to teleport out, a firestaff, and nats to alch drops with (bring lots if you plan to stay awhile, this is important). Note that dust devils are NOT aggressive at any level, which is a huge convenience for all rangers out there. Not being bothered while trying to range from a safe location like fire giants in Baxtorian Falls .

To melee you should definitely bring your best armor and good food, as devils are level 93 and hit fairly often. If you have a good defence level and bonus with your armor you should be alright and have no problems.

For a slightly more expensive but much, much more effective idea, you can also do the nature way which is explained below.

For melee if you wish to stay down there for a very long time go to the mage training arena and get the spell bones to peaches. Peaches heal 8 and the dust devils drop bones all the time. To do this kill the dust devils until you have a full inventory of bones and cast the spell. All your bones will now be turned into peaches which you can eat and use as food. This way you only need nature, water, and earth runes. I have stayed down in the tunnels for 6 weeks straight with about 1k nats. You don't have to worry about loosing the 350k in nats because you can make that back very fast down here. Below is a picture of what I wear when I melee dust devils but any armor rune or above and any weapon will do fine; note the runes in the inventory picture, you can bring many more if you plan to stay longer or if you don't then you can bring as many as you feel you will need.

Melee Equipment

Note: You can use any weapon you prefer and a barrows or a rune set. Be sure to bring some extra nats for alching and a chisel because they drop gems frequently. You don't have to keep the gems but you might as well get a little crafting exp out of it. You don't need to bring fire runes because they drop them almost constantly. You may also consider bringing a mud staff or a lava staff plus water runes to cast both spells you will use. I find that only keeping rannar weeds will also let me stay down a lot longer as they drop loads of herbs too. Also to save an extra 2 or 3 spaces just use your glory as a teleport out.

The food I have in my inventory is monkfish but if you don't have access to that then lobbies, swordfish, or sharks are perfectly good replacements, considering how the majority of your food will be peaches from the bones to peaches spell anyway.

Another way that is not well known is to use Guthans. Many people think that you will instantly start taking damage and your stats lowered but the dust takes around 12 seconds to start affecting you. For this method use all the same stuff as in the normal melee section only make sure to bring your full Guthans. When you are low on health, don't get too low, stop attacking the dust devils. Go over to where the fire elementals are and put on your Guthans and quickly attack them. After each kill put your mask back on and wait for it to respawn until you are back to full health.

Note: if you are not wearing any of the masks the dust will hit 10 damage each 12 seconds, when you have about 1 hp remaining it will only hit 0's, so there is no way the dust can kill you.

Whichever method of slaying you prefer, consider turning your detail setting to "low detail," as this hides a transparent smokey foreground which can hinder visibility making it very difficult to read your private messages if your private chat is set to "split." It also would seem to add a good bit of stress to your system if you are playing on an older computer.

Getting There:

To reach Smokey Well from Shantay Pass, you can walk or take the magic carpet, but since the carpet is cheap, there's no reason not to take it. You actually could just move your house to Pollnivneach and then use the house teleport, but either way it doesn't matter. Below is a map showing the entire trip starting from Shantay Pass.

Slaying the Dust Devils:

For actually slaying them, there are a number of range spots, but only a few are really good. Below is information and pictures of the range spots which are most known and used.

The primary spot: This spot is one of the easiest as the dust devil will always get stuck on its first move. It can double as a hally spot for those so inclined.

Range Spot 1

Another spot which is close the the main melee area can be a little more difficult to get the dust devil stuck but there are more of them in the area.

Range Spot 2

The third spot can be the most difficult. The dust devil does not always get stuck and you may have to 'move' it around a little until it works. This spot is also near the main melee area.

Range Spot 3

Do note however that devils occasionally have the tendency to spawn in one of the 8 adjacent squares, but this shouldn't pose any problems at all if you're aware. If the dust devil moves in a different direction when it spawns and doesn't get caught in the safe spot, just run a bit and back to the safe spot get it caught.

Below is a map of all known good range spots:

Safe Spots in the Smokey Well

Melee is a bit different; dust devils tend to wander around quite far from their spawn points, but there are many scattered throughout the well. They do tend to spawn back rather quickly after you kill them, so you will probably end up finding your own spot that you are comfortable with and going back and forth killing 2-3 different dust devils, but the highlighted areas are a good place to start.

We hope this guide has helped you to kill Dust Devils and maybe even helped you get that wonderful Dragon Chain.
