Introduction

On the 13th of June, 2005, a substantial addition was made to the Runecrafting skill. This addition, was the Abyss. The Abyss allows for an extremely fast method of crafting high level runes, however, it is has its risks.

The Abyss is in Level 5 Wilderness, directly north of Edgeville. This means that you run the risk of being killed by another player. In addition, you are skulled upon entry to the Abyss. This means you risk losing your pouches, your armour, and possibly your glory amulet.

To use the Abyss, you must have completed a miniquest for the Mage of Zamorak.
For more information on this mini-quest please visit the Mage of Zamorak mini-quest guide.

It is recommended you use the Abyss only to craft the following runes, for others it is faster using the traditional way:

  • Cosmic
  • Chaos
  • Nature
  • Law
  • Death

Glory Amulet method

This is the most commonly used method to runecraft using the Abyss, as it is the fastest and the simplest. However, when using this method be prepared to lose your Glory amulet - in some cases, death is inevitable.

Equipment:

  • Pouches (all that you can use, make sure they are full of rune essence!!)
Glory amulet, equipped (it is recommended you have 5 or more of these in your bank to stop you having to recharge them all the time. It is recommended you have access to the Heroes Guild to charge the amulets).
  • Pickaxe or axe, equipped (use adamant if you are worried about losing a rune one, as it works almost as well and is much cheaper to replace).
  • Ectophial (optional, for teleporting out in case of an attack)
  • Prayer potion(4) (optional, for protecting item in case of an attack)
  • Rune essence
  • Best dragonhide armour equipped (optional, for defence against attackers)
  • Mystic hat, equipped ( optional, for additional magic defence)
  • Elemental shield or Saradomin Holy Book (for defence against attackers, Saradomin book recommended as it can be retrieved and offers useful defence bonuses)
  • Boots of Lightness, equipped (for removing 4kg from your weight, and making it easier to run).

Method

Run to the Zamorak Mage, north from Edgeville bank. Once you are in the Abyss, look for a way out. You will be able to distract the eyes or squeeze through gaps with no equipment; if you have an axe or pickaxe, you can cut the tendrils or mine the rocks. Once you are inside the inner ring, locate the desired portal.

Craft the runes, empty all your pouches and then craft again. Next, unequip your glory, rub it, and teleport to Edgeville. If the amulet still has charges, equip it, otherwise bank it and get a new one. Refill your pouches with essence, eat if necessary, and fill your inventory with essence. Then, just repeat the whole method.

Ancient Magicks Method

This method is almost as fast as using a Glory amulet, and involves much less risk. However, you sacrifice two inventory spaces and cannot have a pickaxe/axe equipped, and you must be on Ancient Magicks. To use this method, you must have completed the Desert Treasure quest.

Equipment

  • Pouches (all that you can use, make sure they are full of rune essence!!)
  • Fire staff/air staff, equipped
  • Air runes/fire runes (use fire runes if using air staff, air runes if using fire staff. It is recommended you have 10 runes in your inventory to save time banking)
  • Law runes (use twice as many as air/fire runes, it is recommended you have 20 to save time banking)
  • Pickaxe or axe, in inventory (optional, use adamant if you are worried about losing a rune one, as it works almost as well and is much cheaper to replace)

Craft the runes, empty all your pouches and then craft again. Next, cast the spell Padewwa Teleport. You will land in Edgeville dungeon. Run a little south, up the ladder, and go to the bank. If you need more teleport runes, withdraw some. Refill your pouches with essence, eat if necessary, and fill your inventory with essence. Then, just repeat the whole method.

Dueling Ring Method

This is just the same as the Glory amulet method, however there is much less risk involved. To use this method, equip a dueling ring instead of a Glory amulet. When you have crafted your runes, teleport to Castle Wars using the ring. Next, withdraw a Glory amulet and teleport to Edgeville. Bank the amulet and repeat.

Tips and Tricks

If you are attacked, there are a number of ways to avoid losing your precious items. It is fairly easy to escape rangers and melee'ers (just run to the Zamorak Mage as fast as possible), but mages are more difficult if they hold you. If you have a form of teleport on you, try that. It is very difficult to teleport using Glory amulet during combat. If you are teleblocked, drink your prayer potion and turn on Protect Item. Next, drop your most valuable items on the ground. Once you die, teleport to Edgeville as quickly as possible. It is strongly recommended you have the Gaze of Saradomin set to Falador so you are close to a bank (Recruitment Drive quest). Run to the place where you died and pick up your items, including pouches. You have only 30 seconds before they show up to other players. If you are attacked, try to escape, but you will keep 3 items as you are no longer skulled.

You can also take a more roundabout route to the Zamorak Mage. Often, you will avoid PK'ers by going this way, but it is not guaranteed. See the image below:

Map

Here is a map of the Abyss. It shows the locations of all the rifts, two tunnels, and the Zamorakian mage and monsters. You cannot use the rift connecting Gielinor and the Abyss.

Ways to get to the center

There are the tunnels to the north and to the south of the inner ring (the green bars on the map). As these have no obstacles, they some times get cluttered with blockage. If one happens to be blocked, then the other tunnel is free to crawl through. If you want to try a different approach, then you can burn boils, cut tendrils, mine rocks, squeeze through a gap, or just fool some eyes! They are around the inner wall of the outer ring. I have recently found that it seems that different barriers move around. One time an entrance could have nothing blocking it, other times it may have eyes watching it. What is in the Abyss? When you first enter the abyss you are in the outer ring. The outer ring is flooded with monsters. It is also a multicombat area.

Here's the different obstacles:

The Center:

In the center, there are the rifts for the runecrafting altars and the rift connecting Gielinor and the Abyss together. Refer to the map for locations of the rifts for each rune altar. Also in the center, there is the dark wizard keeping the center open. He says that if he loses concentration and the rift fails, there are two possibilities. If we are lucky, everyone within a mile gets their heads blown off or get their inside eaten by the abyssal monsters. Or, if we are unlucky, the rifts collapsing will make the universe implode upon itself!
This is the dark wizard keeping the rift open.

Creatures:

Note: Every hit gives you 1 exp instead of 4 exp.

Leech

  • The level 41 abyssal Leaches have little hp and most people can take care of these in one blow. These are the most annoying because they are pure attack and have a rapid attacking rate. Their max hit is about a 2. Use slashing weapons against them.

Guardian

  • The level 59 Abyssal Guardianare probably the most balanced (as far as stats go) of the abyssal creatures. They appear to have a ranged attack. They can hit about a 9 at max. Use slashing weapons against them.

Abyss Walker

  • The level 81 abyssal walkers are barely a threat, so don't panic if they swarm you. They are pure HP and Defense so don't worry. Don't freak out if they swarm you, they can't do much damage! Their max hit is 14 and they rarely hit it. Use crushing weapons against them.

All of the Abyss monsters can drop rune essence, noted rune essence, and ash.

Other things dropped by the monsters are the following:

  • Necklaces of binding(destroyed after 15 bindings)
  • Rune essence- come in random numbers noted, or 1 unnoted.
  • Elemental talismans

Pouches

These monsters drop pouches that range in size- small, medium, large, and giant- and can be used to carry rune essence in, increasing the amount that you can carry to the altars. If your bags become damaged by going in and out of the rift to much then you just ask a favour of the death mage in the center of the abyss and he will fix them up for you.

Small Small pouch 1 Three
Medium Medium pouch 25 Six
Large Large pouch 50 Nine
Giant Giant pouch 75 Twelve

FAQ(Frequently Asked Questions):

Q:How do I get in to the Abyss?
A:After you have done the favor for the zamorack mage you can travel to the abyss. Follow the river that runs east of Edgeville to the north(it ends up being about lvl 5 wildy) and you will reach the Zamarock Mage. You then right click him and chooses teleport (it is quicker than talking to him normally).

Q:What is in the Abyss?
A:When you first enter the abyss you are in the outer ring. The outer ring is flooded with monsters. It is also a multicombat area.

Q.Hey I'm skulled, is this the wildy?
A.No, that is just a side-affect from using zamarock's magic. You can't be attacked by players in the abyss(there used to be a bug where mages could pk but this got fixed promptly after the abyss's release).

Q.Will my skull go away?
A.After about 20 min your skull goes away.

Q.I saw a guy using protect prayers. I thought your prayer was drained. Is he abusing a bug?
A.No, your prayer is drained when you first enter, but you can use prayer pots to recover it.

Q.Hey I got this thing called an elemental talisman. What does that do?
A.It counts as a talisman for the four elements fire, water, air, and earth.

Q.Can I make an elemental tiara?
A. No.

Q.The monsters are not as aggressive now as they were when I first entered. One even left a fight of mine to join another fight. Whats up?
A. These monsters attack outsiders by instinct. The longer you are there, the more the monsters come to not think of you as an outsider and lose their aggressiveness. After about an hour you will notice this. This occurs in nearly any part of RuneScape.

Q.Why can't I find any more pouches? I have one of each.
A. You may only have one of each (even if one of yours is in the bank).

Q.My pouch can't hold as much rune essence anymore. Why is this?
A. They wear out after a while. Speak to the Dark mage in the center of the Abyss to get yours fixed. You can do this before they have actually decayed to prevent it entirely.
