Description: After you foiled a plan to destroy the Grand Tree things have been quiet in the gnome world. Brimstail has found a strange machine, though, built by Oaknock the Engineer during the Gnomes' Golden Age. What does the weird device do? Why on RuneScape was it built?
If you agree to help this bookworm gnome get this confusing device working, you will learn a little about gnome magicks, gnome history, and you will start to uncover a new threat (or is it an old one?) to gnome security - a threat that is a lot harder to see...
Difficulty: Intermediate
Length: Medium
Requirements:
Must have completed The Grand Tree,
5 Construction,
46 Magic,
13 Runecrafting and 45 Woodcutting would be an advantage.
Items Needed: Oak log, Maple log, Hatchet (axe), Knife, Bucket, Mud rune, Hammer, Saw, Pestle and mortar, and Watchtower teleport runes (optional).
Quest Points Reward: 2
Reward: 250 Construction XP, 12k Magic XP, 6k Runecrafting XP, 2.5k Woocutting XP, A small crystal seed (enchant it at the Singing bowl to make a Crystal Saw!), and 2 Quest points.
Start Point: Brimstail, in his cave on the western side of the Tree Gnome Stronghold.
To Start: Speak to Brimstail
-
Start off by heading southwest from the Spirit tree in Tree Gnome Stronghold, until you see the quest start point and a dungeon entrance.
-
Enter the cave and speak to Brimstail.
-
He will ask you to go into the next cave and look at it carefully.
-
Inspect the crystalline bowl in the center of the room, then do everything you can do on the large machine to the north.
-
Go back and talk to Brimstail and he will ask you to go see Hazelmere. He lives on a small island directly east of Yanille. The best thing to do would be to teleport to the watchtower.
-
Once there, go upstairs in the litte hut, and start speaking to Hazelmere. He will only speak nonsense at first, but soon he will cast a spell on you so you can understand him.
-
Continue talking and you will see a neat cutscene. When it is over, Hazelmere will give you a violet pentagon.
-
Go back to Brimstail's cave in the Tree Gnome Stronghold. Tell Brimstail what Hazelmere said, and you will see a cutscene of a masked gnome destroying the machine.
-
Talk to Brimstail again and you will determine someone invisible sabotaged the machine. Go back and inspect the machine to learn that you will need some basic construction items, a Crushed mud rune, and a Bucket of sap from a tree to repair it. Go to the bank east of the cave and withdraw a Hatchet, a Maple log, an Oak log, a Bucket, a Knife, a Hammer, a Mud rune, a Saw, and a Pestle and mortar (if you don't have it already).
-
Use your knife on an Evergreen tree to get a Bucket of sap (Evergreens can be south of the Tree Gnome Stronghold (they are named 'Tree' but they are shaped like an Evergreen)), then use your Mud rune with the Pestle and mortar. Mix the Crushed mud rune into the Bucket of sap, and you will get Magic glue.
-
Go back to the Tree Gnome Stronghold and fix the machine. Now go talk to Brimstail and he will give you two more crystals. Now go back to the machine.
-
The whole machine is based on numbers. Your goal is to insert crystals into the machine so that they equal the number displayed. Here are the number values of all the crystals.
Crystal Color Number Values Circle Triangle Square Pentagon Red 1 3 4 5 Orange 2 6 8 10 Yellow 3 9 12 15 Green 4 12 16 20 Blue 5 15 20 25 Indigo 6 18 24 30 Violet 7 21 28 35
-
For example, if the first number you needed was 10, and if there was only one crystal slot, then you would need to use an orange pentagon in the machine. If you don't have the required crystal, you can use the exchanger to the right to convert high numbered crystals into multiple lower numbered ones. You can also exchange a couple of low value crystals to get a fewer higher valued crystals. Speaking to Brimstail at any time may get you more crystals
-
When you have unlocked it, you will see a cutscene of the cute creature becoming an evil creature. Talk to Brimstail and you will determine they are spies. Brimstail also tells you to go talk to King Narnode Shareen. After establishing his pet became a little monster too, he will ask you to kill all the remaining Evil creatures. Run and kill the evil creature in the room (1 hp). Now you have to go kill the rest of them located in the following places:
- In Brimstail's cave
- Near the King in the Grand Tree
- Near the Spirit tree
- Near the Tree Gnome Stronghold entrance gate
- Near the Gnome Glider, top floor of the Grand Tree
- In the Battle Tortoise pens, northwest of the Grand Tree
-
When you have killed all of the Evil creatures, go speak to the King, and you will finish the quest.
Congratulations! Quest Complete!
You can turn your Small crystal seed into a Crystal Saw by going back to the Singing bowl in the cave and then choosing the Sing-glass option. If you lose your seed or saw, you can retrieve another seed from Brimstail by saying you came to him for a chat.
The Crystal Saw gives you +3 in Construction when building something in your house that requires a saw to build. It doesn't work on gardens, only objects and area's that needs a saw to build it. After you build 28 things with it, the saw will revert back to a seed.
