The Tragic Tale of Dr. Farrell

Born to wealthy parents who died in a freak accident when he was 2, Farrell was a brilliant but eccentric little boy who loved his books more than he loved playing with other kids.

Brought up by a distant caretaker who made sure his finances were in order and paid him little attention, the well-to-do little boy spent most of his days reading research papers and conducting experiments in his basement laboratory, where odd smells emanated, and small explosions sounded often.

Long before he reached adulthood, he had become a complete recluse, and was shunned by townsfolk as the ugly, eccentric little man who locked himself away and did unimaginable things in his dark, dank basement.

All that changed one day, when a visitor arrived at his gate with a bouquet of fresh flowers and the sweetest smile he had ever seen. Lydia was new to Port of Winds, and had moved into a little townhouse beside his. Oblivious to his unwillingness, she began to visit him daily, cleaning up his dusky manor, putting up colorful drapes, and bringing some warmth and cheer to his gloomy and sheltered existence.

Soon, even the townsfolk stopped shunning him and would nod at him when he went out for walks with Lydia. It felt as if he had never known what it was like to be alone.

Then one day, Lydia burst into his study in a fluster, beaming and more beautiful than he had seen her.

“I’m getting married!” she cried, “My sweetheart has proposed. See this ring?”

She flapped her white hand about excitedly, the rose-colored jewel on her finger flashing in the late afternoon light.

“We’ll be wed in a month!” she grinned, then noticed his frozen expression. “Oh, well, I’ll be moving out to the countryside though. I’ll miss you, so you must visit.”

Farrell’s face remained frozen.

Sometime later, a crazed and desperate Farrell disrupted L’s wedding ceremony. Roaring like an animal, he rushed toward the groom, a well-built young man who reflexively pushed L out of the way and threw a defensive punch at Farrell. Almost effortlessly, the small, frail Farrell was thrown backwards, landing in a graceless sprawl, before he began wailing like a banshee. Needless to say, he was thrown out of the church.

Soon after that incident, Lydia left Port of Winds.

Enraged at the unfairness of the world, Farrell locked himself in his mansion once more and threw himself into research. For the next few years, he published a few research and experimental papers that caused some outrage among the scientific community, before withdrawing completely from public interaction. Few townsfolk ever saw him emerge, and enough strange shadows and muffled cries came forth from his house to ensure everyone avoided going near.

Soon, word came of strange and menacing creatures emerging from the Port sewers and the bordering woods of Windia. Livestock and pets also began to disappear under suspicious circumstances. Warriors to aid the villagers of Windia, but the strange mutated creatures only kept increasing in number.

When Windia Village Chief Dun Morgan’s daughter Lillia became the latest victim, and all of El Grego waited with baited breath for news of her death, or worse. Even though adventuring heroes eventually rescued her from his evil clutches, he did not cease his attacks on Windia.

Although the Dragon Fellowship made valiant attempts to fight Farrell and his legion of mutated warriors, it was no easy task, as the demented scientist had spent the last decade experimenting not just on poor animals, but also himself. By harnessing the energies, to end of the rose-colored Carmite gem, once only used as an engagement stone due to its lovely rose color, he could temporarily gain great physical strength and dexterity, which made him a dangerous opponent.

Now, Dun has received another challenge.

“I will take what you most love. Just as you took mine. Be prepared, for I will march with my legion soon, to raze Windia to the ground!”

Can Windia survive this terrible attack?
