Guide to Hobbiton-Bywater and Needlehole Quests

The center areas of the Shire are known as Hobbiton, Bywater and the Hill. These communities are very much the heart of the Shire, the place which hobbits (from there at least) consider to be the center of culture and community for the whole land. As the crossroads for this pleasant land of farms and orchards, you could expect important persons to be found here, and when adventuring in the Shire, you often times will come here to speak to individuals about matters in other areas of the Shire. Aside from speaking to individuals about outside matters, occasionally minor and fun quests (such as the Pie Running quests) are found here too. In a sharp contrast to the Hobbiton-Bywater and the Hill, is Needlehole. Found at the western edge of the shire, past the bogs there, you can find a mixed community of Hobbits and Dwarves, living well enough together and participating in what commerce the Shire needs from the bearded folk. Needlehole has it's own problems though, mainly having to do with a group of disreputable Dourhand dwarves who have been seen nearby. Those of the Free People who travel here need not look far for adventure.

8 Filbert Bolger Daffodil is Missing Needlehole Filibert Bolger told you that his cow, Daffodil, has gone missing, and he suspects that a dwarf named Olwir stole her. Find Daffodil Troll's Knoll is in Rushock Bog, south-east of Needlehole. Filibert suspects that Olwir took Daffodil out into Rushock Bog somewhere. He suggested you start searching at Troll's Knoll. (Author's note: Daffodil's corpse is found at 29.8S, 74.7W) 2. Bring the cowbell to Filibert Bolger Filibert Bolger can be found in Needlehole, north of Troll's Knoll. In your examination of the dead cow you found atop Troll's Knoll, you came across a bell. Perhaps Filibert Bolger will be able to tell from the bell whether the cow you found was his Daffodil. none
8 Postman Redsmith Bundle for Michel Delving Needlehole Postman Redsmith of Needlehole has asked you to deliver a satchel to Michel Delving. Collect the Satchel from Postman Redsmith's Table Avoid nosey hobbits. Postmaster Proudfoot can be found in Michel Delving, near Town Hole. Town Hole is surrounded by hedges. Deliver the satchel to Postmaster Proudfoot in Michel Delving as quickly as possible. Let no nosey hobbits interfere with your duty and don't let the satchel get wet! 90C
8 Lobelia Sackville-Baggins Making Yourself Useful (requires Flourdumpling's Stand) The Hill (Bag-End) Lobelia Sackville-Baggins has heard that there are goblins on the edges of the Shire and has demanded that you do something about them. Talk to Wilcome Tunnelly Wilcome Tunnelly is outside the quarry in Scary, far to the east of Hobbiton. Lobelia Sackville-Baggins is in a bad mood and has demanded that you prove your worth as a Bounder by talking to Wilcome Tunnelly, the quarrymaster at Scary, about the rumours of goblins on the edges of the Shire.  none
9 Lobelia Sackville-Baggins Lobelia's Fireworks The Hill (Bag End) Lobelia Sackville-Baggins is planning a birthday party for herself grand enough to outshine that of Bilbo Baggins several years before. She wants fireworks worthy of her efforts. Talk to Hyacinth Took Hyacinth Took is in Tuckborough, west of the Great Smials. Lobelia Sackville-Baggins has heard that Hyacinth Took knows the art of making fireworks and asked that you place an order for her biggest and brightest. (Author's note: Hyacinth is found at 33.4S, 71.4W) 2. Talk to Lobelia Sackville-Baggins Lobelia Sackville-Baggins is at her home at Bag End in Hobbiton. Lobelia Sackville-Baggins sent you to order fireworks from Hyacinth Took, but Hyacinth informed you that she was out of both fireworks and the materials to make them. She told you to return to Hobbiton and make sure Lobelia will be expected to pay for the materials, if she still wants fireworks. 2. Bring the Coinpurse to Hyacinth Took Hyacinth Took is west of the Great Smials in Tuckborough. Hyacinth Took sent you back to Lobelia Sackville-Baggins to request payment for the ingredients to make her fireworks. Lobelia reluctantly agreed and gave you a coinpurse to take back to Hyacinth. (Author's note: This is the start of the fireworks quest line) 90C
8 Filibert Bolger Tell Bounder Chubb (requires Daffodil is Missing) Needlehole While searching Troll's Knoll for Filibert Bolger's cow Daffodil, you came across the poor creature, dead. She was the apparent victim of some sort of large beast. Filibert blames the dwarf, Olwir, for both stealing the cow and leaving her out in the bog Talk to Bounder Chubb Bounder Chubb can be found on the south side of Needlehole. Filibert Bolger, angered by the death of his cow, has asked you to speak with Bounder Chubb about the incident. 42C
8 Bounder Chubb The Dwarves of Needlehole (requires Tell Bounder Chubb The Needlehole According to Filibert Bolger, his cow, Daffodil, was stolen by a dwarf named Olwir; however, Bounder Chubb hesitates to accuse a dwarf of cow-theft without evidence. Talk to Ulfar Ulfar is at the dwarf buildings north of Needlehole. In order to avoid angering the dwarves with accusations of theft, Bounder Chubb told you to obtain the aid of the dwarves through their overseer, Ulfar. Chubb believes that Ulfar might be able to point out any potential thieves among his folk. 2. Collect the Dourhand Orders The dwarf-hunters prowl the northern and eastern sections of Rushock Bog. The bog lies to the south-east of Needlehole. When you told Ulfar the tale of Filibert's cow, and Olwir's involvement, he wasn't surprised. A number of dwarves of low character have been passing through Needlehole lately, and Olwir seemed to be the worst of them. Ulfar has asked you to acquire letters from the dwarf-hunters that he suspects of working for Olwir. (Author's note: Head due east of Needlehole, following the northern edge of the swamp, and you will run into plenty of dwarves.) 90C and Ulfar's Hammer or Pork Sausage (3)
8 Ulfar A Gift For the North Needlehole From the orders you found, Ulfar has learned that Olwir plans to capture a Stone-troll that stalks Rushock Bog and deliver it as a gift to the Dourhands in the north. The cow he stole from Filibert was bait to trap the creature. Speak to Ulfir Olwir's camp is in the northern reaches of Rushock Bog. Ulfar has decided that Olwir's plan must be put to an end and has asked you to gather a party of warriors to accompany him to the camp. Once there, he plans to infiltrate the camp and slay any Stone-troll Olwir's dwarves may have captured. (Author's note: This quest requires a couple friends. At higher levels, you can do it with only one or two, but there is both Olwir and the troll at the end of this quest.)  90C and Ulfar's Shoulder Guards or Ulfar's Helmet or Ulfar's Robe or Ulfar's Leather Leggings or Olwir's Bane or Two Handed Axe or Olwir's Foil
9 Lobelia Sackville-Baggins By Hook or Crook (requires Brimstones and Sparks) Hobbiton-Bywater Lobelia insists on fireworks for her birthday party. The only possible way to get them in time for her party is to recover the fireworks stolen from Hyacinth Took. Talk to Shirrif Robin Smallburrow Shirriff Robin Smallburrow can be found inside the Ivy Bush in the centre of Hobbiton. Since it will be three months before Hyacinth Took can have more fireworks ready for Lobelia Sackville-Baggins, a month too late for her party, Lobelia instructed you to speak with Robin Smallburrow about recovering Hyacinth's stolen fireworks. 2. Talk to Thain Paladin Took II The Thain can be found at the Great Smials in Tuckborough, south of Hobbiton. Lobelia Sackville-Baggins sent you to speak with Robin Smallburrow about Hyacinth Took's stolen fireworks, but Shirriff Smallburrow told you the matter was outside of his jurisdiction. He suggested you speak with Paladin Took, Thain of the Shire. none
9 Postman Grubb Bundle for Overhill Hobbiton-Bywater Postman Grubb of Hobbiton has asked you to deliver a satchel to Overhill. Collect the Satchel from Postman Grubb's Table Avoid Nosey Hobbits Postman Boffin can be found in the centre of Overhill, far to the north of Hobbiton. Deliver the satchel to Postman Boffin in Overhill as quickly as possible. Let no nosey hobbits interfere with your duty, and do not let the mail satchel get wet! (Author's note: A nosey hobbit is at the bridge here. You can still pass, but it is difficult, and requires patience and good timing.) 90C
8 Barmy Rootknot The Green Dragon Hobbiton-Bywater (The Green Dragon Inn) Gerd Whitfoot, innkeeper of The Green Dragon in Bywater, is entering the Four Farthings Brewing-moot. Collect the Dwarf-Barrel The lost barrel is somewhere north-west of Overhill. The Green Dragon Inn is in Bywater, south-east of Overhill. Barmy Rootknot, the assistant innkeeper at The Green Dragon Inn, has sent you off in search of a lost brandy-barrel. (Author's note: The barrel is found in Lob's Grove, in Bindbole wood, at 26.8S, 71.8W. Beware the many spiders here.) 90C and Green Dragon's Breath Ale
6 Holly Hornblower Pie for the Green Dragon Hobbiton-Bywater Holly Hornblower's pies are in exceeding demand, and she does not have time to deliver them all. Pick up the pie from the table Avoid Hungry Hobbits Gerd Whitfoot is at The Green Dragon Inn in Bywater. Holly Hornblower has asked you to deliver a pie to Gerd Whitfoot at The Green Dragon in Bywater. She warned you to not allow any hungry hobbits catch a whiff of the pie, or they will come by pestering her for a slice, and she has no time for that. (Author's note: This starts the pie running quest line, a deed for the Shire.) none
6 Holly Hornblower Lobelia's Pie (requires Pie for the Green Dragon) Hobbiton-Bywater Opal Goodbody, who is helping organize Lobelia's upcoming party, has been bothering Holly Hornblower to deliver a pie for the party. Pick up the pie from the table Avoid Hungry Hobbits Opal Goodbody is at the Party Field, north of Hobbiton and south of Bag End. When you returned from delivering a pie to The Green Dragon, Holly Hornblower had another delivery task waiting for you: she has asked you to take the pie she baked for Lobelia Sackville-Baggins's birthday party to Opal Goodbody at the Party Field in Hobbiton, south of Bag End and north of the town proper. Make sure that no hungry hobbits catch a whiff of the pie, or they will be pestering Holly for a slice! 90C
7 Gaffer Gamgee Fallen Apples Hobbiton-Bywater (30.2S, 71.5W) Gaffer Gamgee was dismissed from his duties as the gardener of Bag End by the Sackville-Bagginses. Before his dismissal, he was in the midst of gathering apples from the orchard but never had a chance to finish. Gather fallen apples (8) The Bag End apple orchard is just to the west of Bag End. Gaffer Gamgee has asked you to do a little gardening on his behalf by gathering the fallen apples from Bag End's orchard, certain that the Sackville-Bagginses will not chase off a Bounder. (Author's note: The orchard is found at 29.7S, 71.9W and is infested with thieving shrews.) 90C and Mushroom Pie and Apple Seeker (one handed hammer)
9 Postman Cotton Inspire Postman Oddfoot (requires Bundle for Bywater) Hobbiton-Bywater Postman Cotton is delighted that you are helping the Quick Post service regain its reputation for speedy delivery of the mail and wants you to bring word of your efforts to Postman Oddfoot of Frogmorton, who has been rather depressed of late. Talk to Postman Oddfoot Postman Oddfoot is in Frogmorton, east of Bywater. Postman Cotton is concerned for his friend Oddfoot and wants you to bring word of your efforts to revitalize the Quick Post service in hopes that it will cheer him up. (Author's note: Postman Oddfoot is in Frogmort at 32.1S, 68.2W) none
6 Gerd Whitfoot Spoiled Pie from Bywater (requires Lobelia's Pie) Hobbiton-Bywater Holly Hornblower of Hobbiton baked pies using spoiled berries and has asked you to bring any of the bad pies you find back to her. Gerd Whitfoot of Bywater had one such pie. Collect Gerd Whitfoot's Pie Avoid Hungry Hobbits Holly Hornblower's home is north of the Hobbiton main square. Gerd Whitfoot has one of Holly's bad pies, which you should take back to her as quickly as possible. Make sure no hungry hobbits catch a whiff of the pie, since Holly doesn't want to be bothered with them asking for a slice, especially since she has to bake fresh pies for all her customers. 90C
8 Shirriff Robin Smallburrow Untangled Webs (requires Finding the Nest) Hobbiton-Bywater (The Ivy Bush) The spider nest you discovered is blocked from reach by a mass of monstrous webs, too strong to cut through. 1. Talk to Gammer Boffin Gammer Boffin can be found at her home at the centre of Overhill. Shirriff Smallburrow has sent you to Overhill to speak with Gammer Boffin, an old hobbit with a great knowledge of herb-lore. Robin believes she might know of something to help clear the spider-webs away. 2. Collect dram of slug-slime (6) Slugs can be found in Rushock Bog, west of Overhill. Gammer Boffin is at her home in the middle of Overhill. Robin Smallburrow was sure that Gammer Boffin would know of some mixture that might help remove the webs blocking the spider-nest in Bindbole Wood. You went to Overhill and spoke with Gammer, who sent you to collect six drams of slug-slime. (Author's note: You can find the slugs in the bog, but they are not overly common. If you kill everything there, such as toads, etc. the slugs are more likely to spawn.) Boffin's Shoulders (heavy armor) or Milkthistle Draught (3)
10 Bounder A Bounder of Great Merit Hobbiton-Bywater You have proven to be a Bounder of great merit. Talk to Second Shirrif Bodo Bunce Second Shirriff Bodo Bunce is by Town Hole in Michel Delving.
